Who’s behind Remote Control?
Heya, I’m Andrea Hill. I started the Remote Control Publication to help people take control of when and where they work.
My first foray as a remote worker was in 2001, when I moved to the United States from Canada. I was a web developer working for a series of clients, so it really didn’t matter where I was did the work. I was able to relocate and settle into the country I now call home.
Not all was roses, however. It turns out it’s pretty easy for an employer not to pay you when you don’t have any way to walk into his office and ask where your check is.. but that’s another story for another post!
I did the more conventional desk job thing from 2003–2010, when the company I worked for decided to downsize from a large office in the Denver Tech Center to a shared Regus workspace. We were given the option to go into the shared space or work on our own.
In 2011, I transitioned to a completely home-based role with LexisNexis. A lot of phone and web conference time, as my team was completely distributed.
And now I work for a company that helps facilitate communication and collaboration between remote colleagues. ReadyTalk is a Denver-based audio and web conferencing provider.
Remote Control is a place to learn about the opportunities and pitfalls of being a remote worker. We’ll include personal stories and tools to help you live and work wherever and however you can be your best self. We happily accept contributions to the publication, please reach out!
